Cell motility and cell shaping can be controlled by the extracellular mechanical properties, such as the surface topography. The role of the surface topography in cancer cell metastasis is not fully understood. Titanium is the most widely used material in numerous medical applications, because it is non-toxic. Herein, we investigate the morphological changes of malignant and benign cancer cells of urothelial origin upon seeding on TiO2 nanotube surfaces and TiO2 flat surfaces.
Preliminary results reveal that on the TiO2 nanotubular surface cells exhibit numerous membrane exvaginations, such as inter-cellular membrane nanotubes and microvilli, whereas, cells grown on the flat surface become flat while retracting these nanotubular structures.
The application of Titanium nanostructures in cancer research will be discussed.

The European Spallation Source (ESS) is a European construction project in Lund in Sweden for a 5 MW long pulse spallation neutron source. The facility will deliver a 2.86 ms long pulse at 14 Hz and it will deliver 30 times more neutrons in the pulse than any previous source and it will be the first spallation source with an average neutron flux as high as the most intense research reactors. 22 instruments will be developed for the long pulse concept, some of them placed as far away as 300 meters.

The facility should start operating in 2019 with 7 instruments operational for first day of operation. 17 countries have signed an MoU for the design update and the construction of ESS. The accelerator is a linear accelerator with a Warm front-end and three families of super conducting cavities (spoke and elliptical) and will deliver a 2.86 ms long pulse with a pulse current of 50 mA at 2.5 GeV. The target will be a rotating tungsten wheel which is Helium gas cooled. I will in this presentation give an overview of the facility and the ESS project and give some details on the accelerator part of the project.

Contacts between metals and molecules are of central importance for organic and molecular electronics. Highly ordered monolayers and thin films of electrically active molecules on single-crystal metal surfaces are excellent model systems for metal-molecule contacts. They can be used to study fundamental properties of metal-molecule contacts, employing a wide range of surface analytical techniques. In this talk I will give examples of our recent work regarding structure and bonding at the organic-metal interface, interface energetics, and precision measurements of current transport through metal-adsorbed molecules using an STM tip.
