A new approach is applied to the discussion of perfect imaging in the quasi-static regime. This is based upon the quasi-static eigenstates of Maxwell’s equations. Among the surprising results is that, in the limit where ε(1)/ε(2 )= –1 and ε(1), ε(2) are both real, the electric field always diverges in some parts of the system. Moreover, the dissipation rate sometimes also diverges.

In my talk I will discuss some of our recent work using ellipsometry and second harmonic generation (SHG) to study adsorption of species such as p-nitrophenol and crown ethers at the air/water interface and how the ideas of non-linear spectroscopy led us into other experiments including the use of High Harmonic Generation (HHG) to generate and use soft x-ray radiation for coherent diffraction imaging. I will also show how some of the e-Science work on digital and chemical information has improved the way we undertake collaborative and interdisciplinary projects using for example an electronic research notebook.

The quantum mechanics of a two level system, or a bit, is equivalent to a spin 1/2. So, in fact, the term “spin qubit” is somewhat redundant. But we know what we mean: a spin qubit uses the angular momentum of an electron as the quantum two-level system. In the last few years, this definition has expanded, and nearly all that is left of the original meaning is the use of confined electrons in a quantum dots as the qubit.
This talk will summarize the evolution of spin qubits, and provide a status re-port on progress in this field.
