Advancing Sustainability Research for a Better Future

The Institute for Environmental Sustainability (IES) reflects Weizmann Institute’s deep commitment to research that builds a better future for our planet and generations to come.

Through our multi-disciplinary program, scientists pursue new ideas and scientific breakthroughs with practical applications. We are at the forefront of bringing pioneering advancements from the laboratory to the market.

Climate change is arguably the greatest challenge of the coming decades. It’s crucial for society to understand its environmental, social, and health implications, and scientists at the Weizmann Institute are actively investigating these issues to gain a clearer perspective and develop effective solutions. To truly drive change, we must develop solutions that are not only economically viable but also socially persuasive, enabling them to overcome market obstacles and deeply ingrained behaviors.

At IES, we direct significant resources to cutting-edge research, providing a multidisciplinary platform for  leading scientists to address the critical sustainability challenges of our era. Reflecting the collaborative spirit of the Weizmann Institute, scientists from various fields – including biology, chemistry, ecology, mathematics, physics, computer science – engage in studies that span across faculties.

We aim to get scientific breakthroughs into the hands of innovative startups and industry leaders, so they can develop efficient, sustainable technologies for the market.
