About

Since 2007, the Weizmann Institute has been a strong supporter of sustainability research. Through the  Sustainability and Energy Research Initiative (SAERI), the Institute provided over 100 grants – totaling more than $20 million, to fund bold, exploratory research by Weizmann scientists in this crucial area. With the establishment of IES, we are proud to continue our support of innovative sustainability research at the Weizmann Institute.

The IES Grants program provides Weizmann researchers with the opportunity to test new, original directions on a small scale – laying the foundations for subsequent external grants for long term support.

At Weizmann, we have continuously demonstrated that basic research can lead to world-changing technologies. With the IES internal grants program, our goal is to provide expanded support to the multidisciplinary efforts needed to meet the grand challenges of sustainability today.

Funding & Application Info

IES Internal Grants are available to support original research tackling the challenges of sustainability.

Grants are available through three funding tracks:

  1. Single-lab grants: To conduct research related to sustainability, whether as a project within a group’s main scope of interest or as a standalone project for a group working on other subjects.
  2. Collaborative grants:  To support collaboration and research among WIS groups.
  3. Boosting grants: To enhance ongoing sustainability-related research projects that have been selected for funding by an external peer review process, e.g., ISF, GIF, BSF, BARD, etc. Booster grants provide  additional funding for key aspects of research not supported by the original grants.
  4. Long-term Field & Infrastructure Grants: Up to 5 years grants for supporting long term sustainability related research projects that require continuous field-based sample and data collection. The program is intended to sustain field research to ensure continuity and data quality.

A call for applications for IES Internal Grants will be published in late December 2025 and applications may be submitted starting January 1, 2026. The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2026.

Applications for an IES Internal Grant are submitted via the RGP system.
Please check the RGP bulletin and website for details at the end of December.
