Electra Renewable Energy: L.D.I. aerial view
The Weizmann Institute of Science has recently switched to the use of only green electricity and is becoming, for the first time, a fully renewable energy campus.
Energy management activities are overseen by the Construction & Engineering Unit, which has an energy management system in place to support efficient energy use across campus, including controlled electricity usage and managing air exchanges in designated spaces.
Renewable Energy & Efficiency Initiatives
- The Institute will purchase solar-powered electricity from a supplier of clean energy to cover all the electricity consumption of its campus by 2025.
- There is a 17,500 sq. meter solar PV field at Kimmel Campus, which provides ~10% of the Institute’s annual electricity demand.
- There are 3,000 sq. meter solar PV rooftop systems on campus, which provide additional energy for the campus.
- Lighting and AC sensors are being installed in all buildings to save on electricity.
- The Institute has developed sustainable procurement guidelines for the purchase of freezers and refrigerators.
Future Projects
- New solar PV rooftop installations will be installed on campus to achieve a total of ~20% of the Institute’s annual electricity demand produced on campus.
