Alfredo Antonio
Lopez Castillo (Alumni)
Alfredo Antonio is a PhD student in computational biology at the Weizmann Institute of Science, supervised by Dr. David Zeevi in the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences. His research utilizes computational metagenomics to investigate how human activities impact the microbial world.
He has a BSc from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and completed his MSc in Computational Biology at the Weizmann Institute of Science under the guidance of Prof. Nir Friedman.
Alfredo Antonio’s research focuses on understanding the impact of human-mediated activities on microbial dispersal and selection, using computational metagenomics. To this end, he develops computational tools and algorithms to study how these changes influence the functional capabilities of various gene families.
Beyond the lab, he has volunteered with projects in Mexico that promote sustainable reforestation without introducing invasive species in deforested areas, helping to understand the impact of invasive tree species on wild forests.
