Prof. Assaf Gal’s lab, Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences

Emanuel Avrahami is a PhD student researching complex biomineral formation under the supervision of Prof. Assaf Gal in the Department of Plant and Environmental Sciences at the Weizmann Institute. He has a BSc and MSc in Biology from Ben-Gurion University of the Negev.

In his PhD research, Emanuel works on complex pattern formation in biologically made microscopic crystals. He focuses on structures called Coccoliths, which are multi-crystal arrays made by unicellular algae that have various species-specific architecture. He uses a suite of electron microscopy modalities to investigate developing coccoliths, both ex situ and in situ. His research has revealed novel mechanisms for controlling the assembly of hierarchical complex crystals and tailoring their specific shapes in a reproducible manner. His work has an impact on fundamental insights for both complexity-inducing mechanisms in nature, as well as future endeavors in materials science.
