Prof. Naama Barkai’s lab, Department of Molecular Genetics

Offir Lupo is a PhD student studying gene regulation under the supervision of Prof. Naama Barkai in the Department of Molecular Genetics at Weizmann Institute. Offir Has a BSc in Plant Sciences from the Hebrew University and an MSc in Computational Biology from the Weizmann Institute.

In his PhD research, Offir studies the molecular mechanisms that regulate gene expression - a fundamental process throughout the tree of life that is critical for cellular response, physiology, and development. Altering gene expression is often used in agricultural biotechnology to modify crops to enhance traits such as yield or drought resistance - important features in times of increasing food demand and climate change. Offir is currently focusing on the mechanism by which certain proteins are able to find and activate specific genes found within immense genomes, and he deploys DNA sequencing, advanced molecular tools, and computational methods to understand how these proteins operate. Most recently, Offir demonstrated that these proteins act independently in finding their correct genes, refuting a central model in the field.
