Ori
Saporta-Katz (Alumni)
Ori Saporta-Katz was previously a PhD student researching ocean transport phenomena under the supervision of Prof. Vered Rom-Kedar and Prof. Hezi Gildor in the Department of Computer Science and Applied Mathematics at the Weizmann Institute of Science. She has a BSc in Physics and Mathematics from the Hebrew University and an MSc in Theoretical Physics from the Weizmann Institute.
In her PhD work, Ori used data-driven computations, phenomenological modeling, and PDE analysis methods to answer key questions about ocean transport. She studied the 3D, time-dependent, chaotic transport pathways of the Mediterranean Outflow Water and their effect on the North Atlantic Ocean and its flow components, specifically on the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, a long-standing question in physical oceanography. She also completed a phenomenological kinematic-dynamic model that couples non-trivial 3D transport with a dynamical density-driven flow, proving this model's well-posedness as a nonlinear PDE system.
In addition to her scientific work, Ori is a long-time player with the Rehovot-Rishon team of the Israel Rugby Women’s League and was part of the Israel National team at the 2019 International Rugby 7s competition.
