Dr. Dvir Gur’s lab, Department of Molecular Genetics

Rachel Deis is a PhD student researching biological crystallization mechanisms under the supervision of Prof. Dvir Gur in the Department of Molecular Genetics at the Weizmann Institute. She has a BSc in Biology from Drexel University (US) and an MSc in Genetics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Rachael’s PhD work focuses on the world of organic crystals and their role in the animal kingdom. From chameleons and copepods to fish and other organisms, these specialized crystals play a vital role in a diverse range of optical purposes. She is specifically interested in the unique cells responsible for producing these crystals, which exhibit unparalleled control over crystal shape, size, and assembly - surpassing even the most advanced techniques in materials science. Despite the discovery of these cells many years ago, very little is currently understood about their biology, particularly the cellular mechanisms responsible for organic crystal formation. Rachael addresses this knowledge gap by leveraging a range of biological, physical, and chemical techniques to investigate the processes involved in the formation of both optically functional and pathological bio-organic crystals.

Rachael is dedicated to volunteering in her community by helping students of all ages improve their grades and prepare for the challenges of attending university. Rachael provides guidance and support, helping these students to develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed academically and beyond.
