Roee
Ben Nissan (Alumni)
Roee Ben Nissan received a BSC with honors in Life Sciences from Ben Gurion University of the Negev and an MSc and PhD in Biochemistry at the Weizmann Institute of Science, under the supervision of Prof. Ron Milo.
In his MSc and PhD studies, Roee was part of an effort of converting E. coli, a sugar-dependent model organism, to consume CO2 as its sole carbon source for constructing the cell building blocks, and characterizing the genetic and metabolic changes that allow for this transition. This work could have positive implications for the field of agriculture or help facilitate technologies for sustainable bio-production. His current postdoctoral work at the Weizmann Institute focuses on how sea-level rise will affect land tetrapod species worldwide, using large-scale geospatial analysis and climate projections to inform conservation priorities.
Roee is interested in education and policy. He has volunteered as a science teacher for students in less privileged populations, worked as a tutor for college students with disabilities, and participates in the Weizmann iScientist program to connect schools with working scientists. In addition, Roee has participated in a summer program at IIASA, a research institute dedicated to integrated systems solutions and policy insights for current sustainability challenges. Roee has also volunteered at a wildlife sanctuary in Bolivia and has participated in various wildlife surveys in Israel.
