Prof. Dan Yakir’s lab, Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences

Yasmin is a PhD student researching the terrestrial carbon cycle under the supervision of prof. Dan Yakir in the department of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the Weizmann Institute. She has a BSc in Biology from Tel Aviv University and MSc in Earth Sciences from Weizmann Institute.

Yasmin’s research focuses on developing a novel tracer for directly estimating plant photosynthetic uptake using Carbonyl Sulfide (COS) fluxes. Currently available methods cannot be used to directly resolve photosynthetic uptake, and instead capture a net flux: photosynthetic uptake offset by respiration. COS has a one-way, gross flux, between plant leaves and the atmosphere, and can be used to directly estimate photosynthetic uptake. Being able to partition between photosynthetic uptake and respiratory emission is important as both respond to climate changes, and the difference in their response will determine the future carbon uptake capacity of the terrestrial biosphere.

Outside the lab Yasmin enjoys improv theatre and is a member of an a cappella singing group. In addition, she is a team leader in the WIS Green Forum.
