I will review the neces-sary background on black holes, and then explain why black hole physics required a thermodynamics, how the latter was constructed, and how its predictions were confirmed--at least at the theoretical level. I will then discuss two or three of the ramifications of black hole thermodynamics which are unfinished areas of research today. -

supernovae provide our most mature probe of the dark energy that drives the accelerating expansion of our universe. I will present the latest constraints on the nature of dark energy from the Supernova Legacy Survey, as well as new astrophysical effects in the supernova population that are refining their use as cosmological probes. I will then show the first results from a next generation sky survey, the Palomar Transient Factory, including new insights on type Ia supernova progenitors, the stars that form these explosions. Finally, I will discuss the prospects for future surveys of the transient universe. -
