To keep their colonies together during flash floods, ants link their bodies together to build waterproof rafts. Ten thousand ants can build a raft in under two minutes. The cluster of ants can drip can flow like a fluid, or spring back like an elastic material. We use time-lapse photography, CT-scanning and rheological force measurement to elucidate how ants perform these feats. -

Environmental Management, University of HaifaOrganizer Weizmann School of ScienceContact Abstract Show full text abstract about Three major goals for 2020 were set by the Israeli governmen...» Three major goals for 2020 were set by the Israeli government in recent years: 10% renewable energy in the electricity fuel mix; 20% improvement in energy efficiency; and 20% greenhouse gasses emission reduction.
Current reports show that in all three goals milestones had not been reached, and without clear regulation and allocated budgets, major progress cannot be expected.
Our research defines a combined sustainability index used for evaluating common technologies in the Israeli electricity production market, and energy efficiency measures in the main consumption sectors. The goal is to enable a holistic decision making process, taking into account economic, technological, environmental, social and political considerations.
Using multi-criteria analyses of both the production and consumption indices, we find that outdoor lighting in the municipal sector is expected to be the preferable energy efficiency measure in all expected scenarios of electricity production fuel mix.

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTONOrganizer Department of Particle Physics and AstrophysicsContact Abstract Show full text abstract about Extensive studies of entanglement correlations have led to r...» Extensive studies of entanglement correlations have led to remarkable insights in recent years. Much of the focus has been on correlations between different regions in spacetime and the corresponding geometric entropies, which can be computed efficiently using AdS/CFT. The subject of this talk are non-geometric definitions of subsystems and the relation of the corresponding entanglement entropy to minimal surfaces probing the internal space in AdS/CFT. A recent proposal attempts to relate such surfaces in AdS5xS5 to entanglement entropies between U(n) and U(m) subsectors of U(n+m) N=4 SYM. To sharpen this proposal we will study it for N=4 SYM on the Coulomb branch, which reveals an interesting phase structure and explicitly shows limitations to the proposed identification. This leads us to a refined proposal, based on the relation of the internal space to the R-symmetry of N=4 SYM. -
