Fermentors

The BioFlo610 - (40-100 liters) pilot plant fermentor is a sterilization in place, top of the line fermentor, equipped with temperature, agitation, level/foam, pH, dissolved oxygen, and pressure controls from New Brunswick Scientific. This unit is routinely used to grow large volumes of microorganisms in batches or using fed-batch protocols for High-Density cultures.
The BioFlo115 -The latest addition to our unit. This new laboratory glass fermentor (New Brunswick Scientific) has all the features of the most advanced fermentors, and enables us to make pilot runs of 1-2 liters or larger 10 liters fermentations.
This unit can be used to grow microorganisms in batches or using fed-batch protocols for High-Density cultures. This fermentor along with the BioFlo110, and BioFlo2000 can be used for process development.
BioFlo110 - Can be run with a 1 or a 10 Liters glass fermentor equipped with temperature, agitation, level/foam, pH and dissolved oxygen controls (New Brunswick Scientific). This unit can be used to grow microorganisms in batches or using fed-batch protocols for High-Density cultures. This fermentor along with the BioFlo115, and BioFlo2000 can be used for process development.

This unit can be used to grow microorganisms in batches or using fed-batch protocols for High-Density cultures. CEPA LE centrifuge - The two continuous centrifuges in the unit enable the collection of cell mass or filtrate from large volumes, avoiding the need to arrest the centrifuge, as done with floor centrifuges (e.g. - Sorvall). The centrifuges are usually used to collect cells from fermentations (5 through 30 liters within 2 hours). The volume of the rotor is large enough to hold ~300 grams of cell pellet.
CEPA Z-41 centrifuge - This centrifuge, like the LE model, is used to collect cell pellet or filtrate from fermentations performed in the pilot plant system, thus covering the higher end of fermentations in the unit. The capacity of the centrifuge is 100-500 liters per hour and the 2 liters rotor can hold up to 2.5 Kg of cell paste. This unit is also used to collect cells from High-Density fermentations where >0.5 Kg of paste is expected.
Autoclave - the two large volume autoclaves (Tuttnauer) are used to sterilize liquid media, media for bacteriological plates, large volume liquid media such as bioreactors and any material that needs to be sterilized.
Pouromatic - two automatic machines used to pour large quantities of 6 and 9 cm agar plates.
Ultrasonic processor (Sonics Inc.) is used to disrupt cells by sonication, it is suitable for the processing of cell suspensions ranging from 0.2ml to 50ml.
Microfluidizer - (Microfluidics Corp.) - is a high pressure cell lysis and shearing instrument (typically between 15,000 and 28,000 PSI) that is used to prepare extracts from cells resuspended in volumes larger than 200ml (e.g. - from a fermentor). The Microfluidizer is routinely used to break bacteria, algae, and yeast cells. This machine is able to extract both soluble and membrane associated proteins, using two different collision cell geometries: Z-shape canal and Y-shape canal respectively.
