Flow cytometry about

Flow Cytometry is the measurement of single cells as they flow one by one past laser beams with the resulting light scatter and fluorescence emission detected and analyzed. Multiple biophysical properties of each individual cell can be measured at rates of thousands of cells per second. Cells are identified by their staining with fluorescent dyes that bind directly to specific constituents like DNA, RNA, proteins or ions or with dyes conjugated to molecules like antibodies, lectins, or hormones that bind to different cellular structures. Cells may also be identified following an infection or tranfection by marker fluorescent proteins. Flow Cytometry can detect and analyze multiple fluorescent staining simultaneously in each individual cell and can report and physically separate them by these qualities.

The Flow Cytometry unit contains three types of flow cytometers

  1. Cell Analyzers - capable of analysis only. The instruments available are: LSRII with 4 lasers and SORP-LSRII (LSRII-new) with 5 lasers.
  2. Cell Sorters - can analyze and also sort cells from chosen populations in a precise manner and deposit them into tubes or plates. This can be done under sterile conditions. The instruments available are: FACSAriaII with 3 lasers, SORP-FACSAriaII with 5 lasers, FACSAriaIII with 4 lasers (can be used also as a cell analyzer) and FACSAria FUSION with 5 lasers.
  3. Imaging Cell Analyzer - capable of imaging cells in flow. The instrument is called ImageStream. It can collect 12 channels of brightfield and fluorescence and quantify staining intensity, pattern, localization and morphology.
  4. Mass Cytometer - can analyze single cells, labeled with stable heavy metal isotopes using Mass Spectrometry. The "CyTOF2" can analyze with relatively high speed and resolve over 100 metal probes with minimal signal overlap

The service provided incorporates assistance during planning, execution and analysis of experiments. The emphasis is on teaching multiple users to become independent.
Lab courses are conducted twice a year for students of the Institute.
