How to Apply

Essential guidance for completing and submitting a PhD application

The following sections will guide you through the application process for the Feinberg Graduate School’s PhD program, providing detailed information on preparing and submitting your application ─ and understanding what process takes place after you’ve submitted all of the necessary documentation. The PhD program at the Feinberg Graduate School is open to all qualified students regardless of religion, race, color, national origin, age, disability or gender.

Minimum Academic Requirements

To apply for the PhD program, you must hold one of the following degrees:

  • MSc from the Weizmann Institute of Science, subject to confirmation by the Dean of FGS
  • MSc in a research track with a thesis from another accredited academic institution
  • MD degree
  • MSc (research track with thesis), or a PhD degree in engineering in selected fields

Second-year students at FGS are eligible to apply for transition to the direct PhD track.

If you have a degree from an accredited institution other than the Weizmann Institute of Science, your application will be considered on the basis of:

  • Previous studies
  • Research achievements
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Personal interview

If You Studied Outside of Israel

PhD candidates from non-Israeli universities or institutions of higher learning may be required to take external evaluations including:

  • GREs: Both general tests and tests in the subject you want to study. The FGS code for GREs is 3398, and scores must be sent directly from the GRE testing center.
  • TOEFL or IELTS: Only for candidates whose mother tongue is not English.

Waiving the need to provide GRE and/or TOEFL scores is at the discretion of the relevant Board of Studies.

Finding an Advisor and a Research Group

Acceptance to a PhD program is contingent on finding an advisor who is a senior ranking member of the Weizmann Institute’s research staff. Therefore, you must make the necessary arrangements with a potential advisor prior to submission of your application file and its review by the Board of Studies. You must ensure that your application file contains a support letter from your potential advisor. If your potential advisor is scheduled to be on a leave of absence for more than three months during the first year of your studies then you will not be able to start your PhD until their return to the Institute.
